Millcreek 50K (Wasatch Mountains) – UT

July 28, 2006

I participated in a very unique local informal race, the Millcreek 50K.   What makes this race unique is that it is run during the night, starting at 9 p.m.  It was a great chance to meet more local runners, put in an intense long training run, and enjoy the Wasatch Mountains of Utah during the night.

Deseret News Marathon

Running the Pioneer Trail

Usually runners start with marathons and then progress to ultramarathons.   I took the opposite route.   I’ve run in 20 ultramarathons, but have never run in, or witnessed a marathon in person.  At the prompting of my brother, Bob, I signed up for the Deseret News Marathon on Utah’s Pioneer Day holiday (July 24).  This is a unique Utah state holiday that commemorates the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers in 1847.

Tahoe Rim Trail 100 – NV

July 15-16, 2006

I was privileged to run in the inaugural Tahoe Rim 100 race.  This would be my 20th ultra marathon during my short 25-month running career.    More than 90 runners signed up for this race, which is an impressive response for a first-year race.   The course is laid out on state park and state forest land, climbing ridges overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe and various reservoirs.  The surface is mostly very runnable, soft single track.  There is about 19.500 feet of climbs, aided by many switchbacks.
