{"id":780,"date":"2011-05-13T05:00:45","date_gmt":"2011-05-13T10:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crockettclan.org\/blog\/?p=780"},"modified":"2016-03-03T14:59:44","modified_gmt":"2016-03-03T19:59:44","slug":"little-grand-canyon-adventure-run-54-miles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.crockettclan.org\/blog\/?p=780","title":{"rendered":"Little Grand Canyon Adventure Run &#8211; 54 miles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpa1\/v\/t1.0-9\/229263_10150593328110694_6616170_n.jpg?oh=e423023345cb5c6182bc46ab60a96147&#038;oe=57698B1F\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"218\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The San Rafael Swell is a spectacular area of Utah that is generally overlooked by all except off-road vehicle enthusiasts.\u00a0 \u00a0The Swell is a large geologic feature located in south-central Utah about 75 miles by 40 miles.\u00a0 It consists of a giant dome-shaped fold or swell of sandstone, shale, and limestone that was pushed up millions of years ago.\u00a0 Numerous valleys, gorges, mesas and buttes have formed included what is referred to as the Little Grand Canyon which has been cut by the San Rafael River.\u00a0 The area is managed by the BLM and certain portions are protected as Wilderness Study Areas.\u00a0 The federal government has considered designating the area as a National Monument but no action is moving forward because of local concern about the impact on backcountry travel. Regardless, the area is spectacular enough to rival other national monuments and parks.<\/p>\n<p>The area in the northwest section of San Rafael Swell is nicknamed \u201cLittle Grand Canyon.\u201d\u00a0 It resembles the Grand Canyon on a much smaller scale giving an easier opportunity to experience this wonder either inside its depths or on top of the rim.\u00a0 The area on the rim is called \u201cThe Wedge.\u201d\u00a0 The canyon follows the river for 18 miles from Fuller Bottom to the San Rafael Bridge.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpf1\/v\/t1.0-9\/230030_10150595865845694_7893054_n.jpg?oh=d8f22e82830b23ab86963e749209ddd3&#038;oe=57575F97\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"665\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had never visited the Little Grand Canyon area before.\u00a0 At least two races are held in the \u201cSwell,\u201d a marathon on dirt roads called Little Grand Canyon Marathon and the Goblin Valley 50K on the southeast end.\u00a0 (The marathon doesn\u2019t really go through the Little Grand Canyon.) For some time I had my eye on a single-track trail on the rim that was restricted to foot traffic and mountain bikes.<\/p>\n<p>The region is only about 3-4 hours from the Salt Lake area.\u00a0\u00a0 I traveled there Friday afternoon.\u00a0 As I drove the smooth dirt road east of Castle Dale, it looked so desolate and ugly, almost void of vegetation.\u00a0 But I knew I shouldn\u2019t be fooled, there would be spectacular views ahead.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xfa1\/v\/t1.0-9\/224682_10150593313745694_789727_n.jpg?oh=d2c682d74c90c294b37271638d569045&#038;oe=57651F36\" alt=\"My camp at the San Rafael Bridge campground\" width=\"550\" height=\"415\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">My camp at the San Rafael Bridge campground<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I set up my camp for the night down on the San Rafael River.\u00a0 This area, the east end of the Little Grand Canyon, is pretty wide open with some great views of buttes.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpf1\/v\/t1.0-9\/224180_10150593314415694_4573500_n.jpg?oh=79acf5ea1fbbedcd854a2fd576f865c9&#038;oe=574F27A6\" alt=\"San Rafael Swinging Bridge\" width=\"549\" height=\"414\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">San Rafael Swinging Bridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was eager to get an evening run in.\u00a0 I ran over the old San Rafael Swinging Bridge that was built in the 1930s.\u00a0 It is now the only remaining suspension bridge in Utah.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xfp1\/v\/t1.0-9\/225934_10150593314490694_5780366_n.jpg?oh=8cf0ce8398f5749b53aae6da3b2dce7d&#038;oe=575B8ADB\" alt=\"Buckhorn Wash\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buckhorn Wash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next I ran up the well-traveled road through Buckhorn Wash.\u00a0 This is the road that the Little Grand Canyon Marathon runs down.\u00a0 I ran by many ATV enthusiasts setting up their camps for the night in various locations in the canyons.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-ash2\/v\/t1.0-9\/228187_10150593314855694_1507004_n.jpg?oh=fb1a08858507d74876d2007d79080540&#038;oe=5759C579\" alt=\"Buckhorn Indian Art\" width=\"550\" height=\"416\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buckhorn Indian Art<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I arrived at the Indian pictographs, art paintings believed to be up about 1000 years old.\u00a0 In 1996 the State of Utah did restoration on the panels which had suffered from years of vandalism.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 551px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpa1\/v\/t1.0-9\/225583_10150593314955694_7885722_n.jpg?oh=b9640df44bda3549d80e1a26d9877d67&#038;oe=57583AB8\" alt=\"Running down the road through Buckhorn Wash\" width=\"551\" height=\"415\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running down the road through Buckhorn Wash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I ran back down to my camp.\u00a0 10 miles on hard dirt roads was enough for me today.\u00a0 I now wanted to see if I could run up the San Rafael River into the Little Grand Canyon.\u00a0\u00a0 I had not researched if there was a trail that could be run without river crossings, but indeed I found one.\u00a0 The trailhead was about a mile upriver from my camp near a horse corral.\u00a0 There were many groups with horses setting up camp for the night.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xap1\/v\/t1.0-9\/222913_10150593315270694_6918073_n.jpg?oh=874b28c8758bbb5726d146a3708abfff&#038;oe=57691387\" alt=\"In the Little Grand Canyon\" width=\"549\" height=\"423\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the Little Grand Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was already 7 p.m., so I didn\u2019t have much time before sunset.\u00a0 I wanted to see how far up the canyon I could run before dusk.\u00a0 I could see that the trail was used almost exclusively by horses.\u00a0 It was pretty rutty but the further I went, the better the trail became.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xfp1\/v\/t1.0-9\/224088_10150593315200694_4803608_n.jpg?oh=caed3a8a343f675ddb9e114f651fce3c&#038;oe=574FF88C\" alt=\"Ragged Rim\" width=\"549\" height=\"417\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ragged Rim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The rim towered above me and at time looked amazingly rugged.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" tomorrow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was thrilled that I found this trail.\u00a0 It was fantastic running.\u00a0 It rolled and winded along the river deeper into the canyon. Looking up to the rim high above, after about four miles, I could tell that I was below the area that I would be running on the next day.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-ash2\/v\/t1.0-9\/228171_10150593315530694_508993_n.jpg?oh=9e6277d03179073437a1a18f2eb13120&#038;oe=574E3B53\" alt=\"Running in the Little Grand Canyon near Cane Wash\" width=\"550\" height=\"414\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running in the Little Grand Canyon near Cane Wash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I reached Cane Wash and noticed that all the horse tracks turned off the trail and went up the wash.\u00a0 The trail in the canyon continued and looked like it only received foot traffic.\u00a0 I continued for awhile more but finally had to turn back.\u00a0 I was just about out of water and dark was approaching.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xap1\/v\/t1.0-9\/225570_10150595801305694_4475703_n.jpg?oh=bdcfa1e4013ba43081d00e9e27eb0104&#038;oe=5761B4B4\" alt=\"\" width=\"541\" height=\"359\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This trail is located in a protected area, a Wilderness Study area.\u00a0 No bikes or motorized vehicles allowed.\u00a0 I wondered how much further through the canyon it went.\u00a0 It turns out that it continues for another 13 miles to Fuller Bottom.\u00a0 However, it eventually requires many river crossings.\u00a0 Right now, in spring, the river was at its peak and for a few weeks can be floated.\u00a0 That also explains the many campers I had seen near the trailhead.\u00a0 The river was flowing at 236 cubic feet per second, ideal for canoeing.\u00a0 There were a few bugs at this time of year, but they really weren\u2019t a bother.\u00a0 I think an out-and back run in the fall when the river is lower would be great fun, 36 miles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xfp1\/v\/t1.0-9\/230146_10150593315115694_8065557_n.jpg?oh=90e062dded5f7179f33c2103032066c7&#038;oe=575ACC2A\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"424\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I pushed my pace faster on the way back.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t bring a light, but that wasn\u2019t really a worry because I could see the moon already high in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Large fires were burning at the horse camps near the trailhead.\u00a0 It became dark for the final mile of my run back to the camp.\u00a0 I could see my shadow in the bright moonlight.\u00a0 Back at camp, I washed up and cooked a big dinner, and went to bed.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xap1\/v\/t1.0-9\/230978_10150593327210694_947748_n.jpg?oh=e7de4923c26efc32cf4f61a2dc11d0c6&#038;oe=57585E5C\" alt=\"Dawn on the Good Water Rim Trail\" width=\"549\" height=\"414\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dawn on the Good Water Rim Trail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was up before 4 a.m., looking forward to a long run up on the rim.\u00a0 I drove to my starting point near Group Camp #1 where the Good Water Rim trail starts on the east side.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-ash4\/v\/t1.0-9\/231003_10150593327255694_5415966_n.jpg?oh=7e6e1d80f16e149a60d1454aee9ddc94&#038;oe=5767F344\" alt=\"Running on the Good Water Rim\" width=\"550\" height=\"422\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running on the Good Water Rim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I began my run at dawn and immediately fell in love with the trail.\u00a0 It was a soft, smooth single-track trail worn by mountain bikes. This amazing serpentine trail in mostly level and follows the contour of the rim above the Good Water drainage, a side canyon.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xfa1\/v\/t1.0-9\/230218_10150593327325694_5357454_n.jpg?oh=c5c98e4dc5f6bbde397a3c69e22139b9&#038;oe=5763C85A\" alt=\"Running on the Good Water Rim trail\" width=\"550\" height=\"415\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Running on the Good Water Rim trail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I could see in the distance some campers just a mile away as the crow flies that were camped at the head of the canyon.\u00a0 I marveled to think that I would need to run seven miles to reach that location. The trail constantly weaved, presenting a fun challenging trail running experience.\u00a0 There were rocks in the trail but most of them were very broad, flat rocks that were easy to run on.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpa1\/v\/t1.0-9\/226218_10150593327435694_1872342_n.jpg?oh=5a34eb9db653e37695b16de62b3f6ad2&#038;oe=57632802\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"410\" \/>What is really cool about this trail is that I could look across a gorge that I was running on and see the trail ahead, just 100 yards away, yet it would take me another mile to reach that location.\u00a0 I could envision many runners on the trail racing.\u00a0 It would be very cool to constantly see runners ahead and far behind you only yards away.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xap1\/v\/t1.0-9\/223313_10150593327505694_6699076_n.jpg?oh=2a159411db23ea20d7186c2d4015916c&#038;oe=5755F869\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"419\" \/>I ran past several group camping areas.\u00a0 One contained a very large group on a father-son\u2019s campout.\u00a0 They were starting to get up and gave me curious looks as I ran closely nearby on the trail.<\/p>\n<p>I started to seriously ponder how I could put together a 50K on this trail and out along the rim of the Little Grand Canyon.\u00a0 I spent a lot of time thinking about this as I ran.\u00a0 The major issue would be finding a start\/finish location that could handle 50+ cars and would be accepted by the BLM.\u00a0 I spent the rest of my run searching for that location and also identifying portions of the trail that would need markings.\u00a0 If I do get ambitious and find some help, the Little Grand Canyon Rim 50K could become a reality.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-prn2\/v\/t1.0-9\/225308_10150593327560694_4229599_n.jpg?oh=a0758d0668d495d0c0f96839ace14c93&#038;oe=576C537F\" alt=\"View from the head of the canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I reached the head of the Good Water drainage where the trail runs only a few yards away the main dirt road.\u00a0 There, I had stashed some stuff, so I stopped to rest and refill.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xap1\/v\/t1.0-9\/227183_10150593327625694_6372145_n.jpg?oh=03007f37186206405ab99cb1d485031a&#038;oe=57964F0F\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"417\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On my way again, this time on the west side of the Good Water, the gorges were even more spectacular on this side and I could tell it receives more bike traffic.\u00a0 I came across two bikers who looked surprised to see a runner on the trail.\u00a0\u00a0 As I got nearer to the Little Grand Canyon, the cliff drop-offs became deeper and deeper.\u00a0\u00a0 I never had fears of tripping and falling off a cliff.\u00a0 While the trail does follow very closely along the rim, it usually was at least ten feet from the edge.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 548px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-ash4\/v\/t1.0-9\/231068_10150593327740694_1077703_n.jpg?oh=bfa43604121456c8c9e0ceb900adc589&#038;oe=576CADB9\" alt=\"Running on the rim of Little the Good Water Rim single-track and ran on dirt roads along the spectacular views down into the canyon.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-prn2\/v\/t1.0-9\/225168_10150593327860694_1046174_n.jpg?oh=836ca53b32cfe1ec9860b3497b1c68ba&#038;oe=5795B10B\" alt=\"Little Grand Canyon\" width=\"550\" height=\"412\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little Grand Canyon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the Little Grand Canyon viewpoint I stopped to refill at another stash location.\u00a0 On my way again, now wanted to run along the rim as far west as the dirt road would take me.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img evening<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I would stop several times to peak over the rim revealing spectacular morning views.\u00a0 I looked down and could see where I had run through the canyon yesterday evening.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" camps near the rim.\u00a0 I could see many chairs out on the rim where people had enjoyed the sunset last night.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 549px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xap1\/v\/t1.0-9\/226493_10150593328730694_4324883_n.jpg?oh=21c1b555619ea31ec9350c4d31b6ce5e&#038;oe=574E5971\" alt=\"Looking continued on and finally reached the far west end where the road ended at a remote view point.\u00a0 I could see a storm coming in but I wasn\u2019t concerned because it was warm, in the low 60s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpa1\/v\/t1.0-9\/229263_10150593328110694_6616170_n.jpg?oh=e423023345cb5c6182bc46ab60a96147&#038;oe=57698B1F\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"412\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This run along the rim gave me great ideas about a spectacular race course.\u00a0 Since we can\u2019t hold an ultra at the real Grand Canyon, how cool would it be to hold one above the Little Grand Canyon?\u00a0 One problem, runners would be delayed along the way because they would often want to peak over the rim and take pictures.<\/p>\n<p>On the way back, the wind really picked up as the storm neared.\u00a0 I had to hold onto my hat as I again ran on the Good Water Rim trail.\u00a0\u00a0 But the rain stayed away, just a few sprinkles.\u00a0\u00a0 I came across five bikers on the trail, not a lot of bike traffic to worry about.\u00a0 But I realized with my green shirt on, each time they were surprised.\u00a0 Next time I\u2019ll wear a bright color.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-sjc2-1.xx.fbcdn.net\/hphotos-xpf1\/v\/t1.0-9\/225963_10150593328855694_4863343_n.jpg?oh=acf3c0230502e4fe0b81de2b80b80c4e&#038;oe=575B5821\" alt=\"Run finished\" width=\"550\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Run finished<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After about eight more miles on the trail, I was ready to quit, not really wanting to do the remaining six winding miles to my car.\u00a0 The solution was easy, I just went a quarter mile cross-country to the dirt road that took me two miles straight to my car.\u00a0\u00a0 I did a little more exploring along the rim to the east and then drove back to pick up my two stashes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/video\/embed?video_id=10150595896680694\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the Little Grand Canyon overlook, I took more pictures and a video of the panorama.\u00a0 As I looked down, I could see a couple blue tents.\u00a0 Looking closer I could see several kayaks playing in the river near that camp.\u00a0 It looked like great fun.<\/p>\n<p>It had been an amazing 54-mile adventure run, including 31 miles of sweet single-track.\u00a0 I returned home, being away for only 30 hours.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\"
