From Eduardo Ayala: "This is a blessed land. This is a place where the Lord wants his kingdom to grow. This is a place where it will grow. In a small way, you have felt the warmth of the Spirit of the Lord and this is just a small sample of what will be.

"In the month of April, 1976, I said publicly in Santiago, that the day would come when there would be a temple in Santiago, and today, I repeat it. You may write it in your personal diaries because it will happen. I cannot tell you when, but it will happen. In that time, those of this people and the foreigner will have to remove their shoes because it will be hallowed ground.'" (Elder Bruce R. McConkie.)

On April 2 1980, President Spencer W. Kimball, sitting before the replica "Cristus" in the Visitor's Center at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, announced to the world the construction of seven new temples: Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., Buenos Aires, Argentina, Papeete, Tahiti, Nuku9alofa, Tonga, Apia, Western Samoa, Sidney, Australia, and Santiago, Chile. This announcement brought the number of temples either built, under construction or planned to twenty-eight, of which seventeen were operating. Only three years had passed since the time of Elder McConkie's inspired declaration in Santiago at the Area Conference which took place in March of 1977 until the moment that President Kimball announced the construction of a temple in our country. On this occasion, President Kimball indicated what profound joy this invoked, while at the same time saying that these temples "will carry with them the blessings of the ordinances that are performed therein to more and more members. We know that as our people in the nations which would be blessed with a House of the Lord within their borders become acquainted with the higher levels of morality required of those who enter the temple, their marriages and lives as families and individuals will be strengthened."

When the Santiago Temple was announced the Church was celebrating the sesquicentennial 150 years) since its organization in Fayette, New York under the direction of the prophet Joseph Smith, April 6, 1830. In the Saturday morning session on April 5, 1980, President Kimball recalled the announcement he had given only three days prior:

"With the recent announcement of seven new temples, we are beginning the most intense period of temple construction in the history of the Church. The construction of these temples should be accompanied by a strong emphasis on genealogical investigation on the part of Church members. We feel the urgency for this work to be done and encourage the members to accept this responsibility. Members should write their personal and family histories, participate in the extraction program when called to do so, research their four generations, then continue their family research to redeem all their dead."

This great announcement for our country mobilized the priesthood and the faithful members to accomplish a gigantic assignment, a change of heart and a powerful surge in missionary work as well as in genealogy. Referring to this name extraction work Elder Carlos Cifuentes termed this the "building blocks of the temple." The Chilean people received huge challenges for this marvelous event: Each stake was to accumulate US$ 7,000, raise the number of members to 100,000, have 10,000 holders of the Melchizedek Priesthood, 10,000 adult men and women with a temple recommendation, the 100,000 members should prepare 100,000 names through personal research for temple ordinances, and 100,000 names extracted for temple ordinance usage.

It was a rainy day, but one full of sunshine for the Chilean people, May 30, 1981, when President Spencer W. Kimball broke ground on the temple construction site.

Finally, the dedication of the Santiago Temple took place with ten dedicatory sessions between the 15th and 17th of September, 1983, under the direction of President Gordon B. Hinckley, then Second Counselor in the First Presidency. Even with ten sessions the overwhelming crowd of anxious and emotional attendees far exceeded the capacity of the temple. Seat tickets were issued which filled many rooms of the adjacent Church office building, Missionary Training Center and Mission Offices. In typical warm Chilean fashion, those who had worked for years throughout the country to prepare for this moment gathered for hours outside the Temple to share their joy with one another.

Today the Santiago Chile temple operates around the clock on Friday nights and opens Mondays to serve the three missions in Santiago.

As remembered by current Santiago Chile Temple President Eduardo Ayala Translated and concluded with his permission by Ted Dorff and Viviana Ayala.
