Millcreek 50K (Wasatch Mountains) – UT

July 28, 2006

I participated in a very unique local informal race, the Millcreek 50K.   What makes this race unique is that it is run during the night, starting at 9 p.m.  It was a great chance to meet more local runners, put in an intense long training run, and enjoy the Wasatch Mountains of Utah during the night.

Deseret News Marathon

Running the Pioneer Trail

Usually runners start with marathons and then progress to ultramarathons.   I took the opposite route.   I’ve run in 20 ultramarathons, but have never run in, or witnessed a marathon in person.  At the prompting of my brother, Bob, I signed up for the Deseret News Marathon on Utah’s Pioneer Day holiday (July 24).  This is a unique Utah state holiday that commemorates the arrival of the Mormon Pioneers in 1847.

Antelope Island Buffalo 50K – UT

March 18, 2006

I ran in the first-ever Antelope Island Buffalo Run 50K on Antelope Island, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, Utah.  I really enjoyed the experience especially because it was the first ultra that I ran with my brother, Bob.   Bob, who flew in from California, had run in a few marathons and had completed a double-crossing of the Grand Canyon with me last fall, but he had not yet run in an ultra race.   This 50K was an ideal race for a first-timer.

Midnight Mountain 50K Trail Run

July 10, 2004

This was my first attempt at a running race since Jr. High track days.   (In Tucson, ten years ago, I did successfully finish a 110-mile perimeter bike race.)   Linda, Connor, and I drove up to Idaho on Friday evening to stay in a motel.   The race was east of Preston, Idaho and west of Bear Lake and covered a portion of the route of the Bear 100, a 100-mile ultramarathon.
